Tarot (word)

From the Italian tarocchi / French tarot — a 15th-century card game before it was an oracle.

Tarot began as a trick-taking game in Renaissance Italy — tarocchi, with the trump-taking trick (triomfi) that gave English "trumps." The mystical use came centuries later, in 18th-century France.

Which is reassuring: the deck has been both a game and a mirror, and never needed permission to be useful.
